In Motion: The Human Figure in Art and Craft
In Motion explores how contemporary artists and makers use the human figure to express movement, emotion and connection. Across painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass and jewellery, the body appears dancing, turning, reaching, resting and poised between one movement and the next.
Rather than presenting the figure simply as a subject, the exhibition looks at gesture, posture and rhythm: how the smallest shift of a hand, shoulder or stance can suggest character, tension or relationship.
Three-dimensional works extend these ideas into physical space. Figures are shaped in clay, held within glass, constructed in sculpture and carried in jewellery made to move with the wearer. Together, the works show how the human body continues to offer artists a rich way of exploring how we move through the world and relate to one another.
Artists include Margaret Ashman, Chris Holley, Andrew Macara, Sally McKay, David Mayne, Helen Noakes, Eliza Southwood and Hannah White.
