Town Council celebrates Green Flag success as all cemeteries achieve national recognition

Farnham Town Council is celebrating further progress on the management of its open spaces with the achievement of Green Flag awards for all four of its cemeteries.

Green Lane Cemetery has become the fourth and final cemetery to receive the internationally recognised quality mark for parks and green spaces, joining Hale Cemetery, Badshot Lea Cemetery and West Street Cemetery in meeting the high standards required for the award.

This year’s results saw Hale Cemetery retain its Green Flag for the third consecutive year, while Badshot Lea Cemetery and West Street Cemetery have each secured the accolade for the fourth year running.

In addition, Gostrey Meadow has once again demonstrated the success of the Town Council’s continued investment in its green spaces by receiving a Green Flag Award for the sixth consecutive year.

The Green Flag Award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. Achieving and retaining Green Flag status reflects Farnham Town Council’s ongoing commitment to providing attractive, welcoming, safe and well-maintained open spaces that can be enjoyed by residents, visitors and wildlife alike.

Councillor Mat Brown, Lead Member for Environment says: “To have every one of our cemeteries recognised with a Green Flag Award is a tremendous achievement. Our cemeteries are not only places of remembrance but also peaceful green spaces that support wildlife, biodiversity and the wellbeing of our community.

“I am also incredibly delighted that Gostrey Meadow has once again retained its Green Flag. It’s the focal point for many community events and is visited by thousands of people every year. Green Flag recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our outside workforce, whose care and attention ensure these important spaces are maintained to the highest possible standard.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under contract from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. It recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational and green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
