Pollinator Area at Library Gardens
Hive Helpers and Farnham Town Council have been working in partnership to care for the pollinator area in the centre of Library Gardens, as part of the Surrey Community Nature Recovery Grant project.
You might notice that it looks a little untidy at the moment, but this is all part of helping nature thrive. Instead of cutting everything in the same way, different areas are being managed differently – some cut short, some left longer, and some left undisturbed altogether.
The area has also been scythed rather than mown. Using a scythe creates a more varied cut, which helps form a patchwork of micro-habitats within the grass. This provides valuable shelter for insects and supports a wider range of wildlife.
This varied approach creates a rich mix of habitats where nature can flourish. Beetles can find safe shelter, butterflies benefit from longer grasses, and plants like green alkanet are able to flower again, providing much-needed nectar for bees.
It may not look neat and tidy right now, but this approach makes a real difference in supporting local wildlife and creating a healthier, more vibrant green space for everyone to enjoy.
