Farnham Remembrance Events

Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade

Every year, Farnham comes together in large numbers for the Remembrance Sunday service and parade.

The parade assembles in Castle Street before making its way to the war memorial at Gostrey Meadow for the Remembrance Service. The service includes a two-minute silence at 11am, followed by the Last Post, readings, and the laying of wreaths.

Following the ceremony, the parade continues with a march past, featuring members of the armed forces, uniformed services, youth organisations, and local dignitaries. The salute is taken outside the Town Hall on South Street.

The Remembrance Parade and Service are organised by Farnham Town Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion (Farnham).

Alongside the main town-centre service, additional acts of remembrance take place in Badshot Lea, The Bourne, Hale, Rowledge, Weybourne, and Wrecclesham.

The world’s first two-minute silence is believed to have been held in Castle Street on 10 May 1916.

Schools’ Remembrance Service

On the Friday before Remembrance Sunday, children from local schools gather at the war memorial in Gostrey Meadow for a special Schools’ Remembrance Service.

The service is led by the Mayor of Farnham and is attended by invited guests such as representatives of the Royal British Legion, local faith leaders, and civic dignitaries. At 11am, all present join together in a two-minute silence to remember those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and in conflicts since.

Following the silence, children from participating schools share original poems written especially for the occasion. Wreaths are then laid, and commemorative crosses are planted around the memorial.

The Schools’ Remembrance Service is coordinated by Farnham Town Council in partnership with the Farnham Schools’ Confederation.
