The Secret Gardens of Farnham is an annual competition to find Farnham’s best secret gardens. We look for shop fronts bedecked with floral arrangements, imaginative front and back gardens, wildlife havens, beautiful courtyards, pub gardens with a difference and creative hanging baskets and containers.

Who can enter

The competition is open to gardeners who live in Farnham. This includes:

  • Badshot Lea
  • Hale
  • Upper Hale
  • The Bourne
  • Boundstone
  • Heath End
  • Moor Park
  • Rowledge
  • Weybourne
  • Wrecclesham and
  • Farnham town centre

The categories

There are nine categories, which include:

  • Best courtyard
  • Best hanging basket or container
  • Best front, back or small garden
  • Best large garden
  • Best business premises, public house or hotel
  • Schools’ garden award
  • Best shop front
  • Best wildlife garden
  • The Madge Green Community Garden Project

Judging criteria

The judges look for:

  • Planting, annual bedding, shrub borders and other general planting
  • Lawns
  • Hedges
  • Vegetables
  • Compost areas
  • Areas for wildlife – from bird boxes to bug hotels
  • Environmental best practice – use of peat-free compost and rainwater harvesting


All entrants will be invited to the Farnham in Bloom Awards’ ceremony, which takes place in October at Squire’s Garden centre in Badshot Lea.

The winner of each category will receive a trophy and certificate.

First prize will be £50 in garden vouchers. The winner will hold the trophy for one year. Second and Third places will also receive certificate.

A ‘Gardener of the Year’ award will also be given by the judges.

Judging day

Judging usually takes place in June.

Closing date

The closing date for entering the competition is usually the middle of June.
