The annual competition to find Farnham's best secret gardens and gardeners.

The Secret Gardens of Farnham is an annual competition to find Farnham’s best secret gardens. We look for shop fronts bedecked with floral arrangements, imaginative front and back gardens, wildlife havens, beautiful courtyards, pub gardens with a difference and creative hanging baskets and containers.

Who can enter

The competition is open to gardeners who live in Farnham. This includes:

  • Badshot Lea
  • Hale
  • Upper Hale
  • The Bourne
  • Boundstone
  • Heath End
  • Moor Park
  • Rowledge
  • Weybourne
  • Wrecclesham and
  • Farnham town centre

The categories

There are nine categories, which include:

  • Best courtyard
  • Best hanging basket or container
  • Best front, back or small garden
  • Best large garden
  • Best vegetable garden
  • Best business premises, public house or hotel
  • Best Schools’ garden
  • Best shop front
  • Best wildlife garden
  • The Madge Green Community Gardening Project award

Judging criteria

The judges look for:

  • Planting, annual bedding, shrub borders and other general planting
  • Lawns
  • Hedges
  • Vegetables
  • Compost areas
  • Areas for wildlife – from bird boxes to bug hotels
  • Environmental best practice – use of peat-free compost and rainwater harvesting


All entrants will be invited to the Farnham in Bloom Awards’ ceremony, which takes place on the evening of Thursday 10 October at Squire’s Garden centre in Badshot Lea.

All entrants will receive a certificate whilst the winner of each category will receive a trophy/prize and certificate.

A ‘Gardener of the Year’ award will also be given by the judges which will be revealed at the Awards ceremony.
