Gostrey Meadow’s new playground opens for fun and play

A crowd of adults and children watch as the Mayor and children cut a ribbon to open a new playground.

Families who took part in a consultation to say what they would like to see in Farnham’s newest playground have been amongst the first to try out the play area in Gostrey Meadow.

The lucky families were chosen at random and after joining in an official ribbon cutting ceremony by the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor George Murray, they enjoyed exclusive access to the new playground.

In anticipation of the popularity of the first phase of improvements at Gostrey Meadow, Farnham Town Council arranged additional entertainment which included craft activities, and a coffee cart for the adults. Playground contractor Eibe contributed to the fun by providing goody bags, a circus skills entertainer and free ice cream.

Councillor George Murray, Mayor of Farnham said: “As we prepared to cut the ribbon, there was such excitement from the children. It was a very memorable occasion, and I am sure local families will enjoy many hours of fun in the new playground.”

The playground design reflects Farnham’s heritage and natural features. The meandering blue footpath represents the River Wey, and the multi-tower unit resembles a mill local to Farnham.

Play equipment and facilities that can be accessed by all children have been incorporated into the design with the roundabout, picnic tables, play panels and water play, which is coming in phase two, accessible for wheelchair users.

Stuart Evans from Eibe said: “We have very much enjoyed working on this project and want to thank everybody who commented on the initial designs. Two thirds of people who responded to the consultation chose this playground design as their preferred option. We hope Farnham’s young people enjoy some wonderful adventures and have many happy times in the playground with their family and friends.”

A strawberry tree and paper bark maple have been planted in the new playground with a katsura, which has heart shaped leaves and smells of toffee apples in the autumn at one of the entrance gates. As well as eventually providing welcome shade, the three semi-mature trees have been chosen for their year-round interest.

Gostrey Meadow playground has been funded by Farnham Town Council using Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding along with additional generous contributions from Farnham Lions and Surrey County Councillors Andy MacLeod and Michaela Martin’s Community Fund allocation.

The playground opening is the first phase of exciting improvements at Gostrey Meadow. Farnham Town Council has recently received planning permission for the construction of an amenity building which will include new toilets and storage for the equipment which is needed for the many events held at Gostrey Meadow.

Phase two will also include more play equipment for pre-schoolers include a sensory Lions’ Den and a small water play area. Phase two is expected to be completed in 2026.
