Farnham Town Council is seeking volunteers who love being outside and want to help look after Farnham’s nature.
The Farnham in Bloom Community Day on Saturday 23 March marks the start of spring and the launch of the 2024 Farnham in Bloom campaign which is supported by Gold sponsor The Patio Blackspot Removal Company and Silver sponsor Zenzero.
Throughout the day, volunteers will be able to take part in a variety of activities and challenges such as town centre litter picks, weeding, sowing seeds, planting up flower beds in Gostrey Meadow, bug house building, and helping to develop a wildlife area.
Local environmental and conservation groups will be on hand to explain what they do and the opportunities they have for local people to get involved in their work.
There will also be live music and refreshments and a chance to meet animals from Mill Cottage Farm Experience.
Councillor Matthew Brown, Lead Member for Environment says: “If you want to do something positive for nature and the environment, please come along to the Community Day. Whether you have an hour to spare or are looking to volunteer on a more regular basis, we have opportunities for all.
“One of the things I am most looking forward to seeing is the unveiling of a giant bug house in Gostrey Meadow. The artwork is the creation of Green Up Britain and spells out the word ‘Farnham’ in one-metre-tall letters which have been made from recycled plastic rubbish by Farnham Men in Sheds. It is intended that the installation will offer a unique, safe haven for insects and wildflowers to flourish in this town centre location.”
Kaz Bishop from Green Up Britain says: “The UK is one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. Sadly, we’ve lost 97% of our wildflower meadows since the 1930s, and 59% of our flying insects since just 2004.
“These dire facts made us at Green Up Britain want to do something urgently to help, something highly visible that would draw attention to this pressing issue and engage the local community. We’re really proud of this project.”
Farnham Community Day takes place from 10am to 3pm at Gostrey Meadow and is suitable for all.
