Farnham in Bloom has come to the rescue at Farnham Heath End School by helping students re-plant an area formerly used as a pond, with an array of flowers and wildlife-friendly plants.
“The school has a lovely garden area which the students use as an educational resource and quiet area,” says the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Alan Earwaker. “The Farnham in Bloom team worked with a group of young people to fill the pond with soil, plan a planting scheme suitable for the conditions, carry out the planting and advise on caring for the new bed.
“The students got stuck-in with the practical work and gained some great gardening knowledge too choosing a selection of plants beneficial to wildlife and attractive to pollinators. They learnt about how gardeners are changing their planting schemes to adapt to climate change, such as by opting for plants that need less water, and how gardens are playing an important part in improving biodiversity by attracting insects, birds and mammals.”
Principal of Farnham Heath End School, Stuart Maginnis adds: “Gardening has lots to offer schools, with links to the curriculum in subjects such as science, geography, art and personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE). Our garden is a great asset for pupils – even more so since COVID – giving us an outdoor learning environment and a place for our young people to de-stress. I encourage other local schools and young people’s groups to work with Farnham in Bloom too and find out what gardening can do for them.”
Since lockdown, many residents have spent more time in their gardens, some taking up gardening for the first time. The health and wellbeing benefits of gardening, including fresh air, exercise and relaxation – as well as the enjoyment of homegrown fruit and vegetables – are widely recognised and Farnham Town Council hope to tempt new volunteers into taking part in this year’s activities. The Farnham in Bloom team is particularly keen for children and young people to benefit from the great things gardening offers.
“With our new sponsor, The Patio Black Spot Removal Company, on board, we have a packed programme of activities planned for this year’s Farnham in Bloom,” says Councillor Earwaker. “We need lots of volunteers of all ages to help us deliver them. Whether you are an individual trying out gardening for the first time or a group of experienced enthusiasts, I can guarantee that we will be able to find a role for you. We would love to hear from more schools, families, local businesses and individual gardeners interested in supporting Farnham in Bloom 2021.”
