Farnham’s silent soldiers

Silhouette of a solider

Life size silhouettes of first world war soldiers have appeared at a number of locations in Farnham.

The Royal British Legion’s Silent Soldier campaign is supported by Farnham Town Council and is a mark of respect for those soldiers who never made it home from the first world war.

The soldiers have been sited at the war memorials in Badshot Lea, Hale and Gostrey Meadow. St James’s church at Rowledge is also supporting the ‘There But Not There’ campaign with the installation of a Tommy figure.

Councillor Carole Cockburn, Lead Member for Cemeteries says: “The silent soldiers aim to represent the many soldiers who left Farnham to fight for their country but did not return.

“The soldiers have been placed at the heart of the communities they left behind and are a reminder to us all of what led to the deaths of 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel.”

The silent soldiers will remain on display until after this year’s Remembrance Sunday.
