Farnham is set to join communities across the UK to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of World War II in Europe.
VE Day 80 on Thursday 8 May will start with the Farnham Town Crier, Michael Stephens reading the VE day proclamation outside Farnham Town Hall ahead of the VE Day 80 commemorative flag being raised at 9am.
From 8pm, there will be a community gathering at Gostrey Meadow featuring Winston Churchill’s Victory broadcast, music played by Alder Valley Brass and songs from the era sung by Victoria Cluskey.
The Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Brodie Mauluka says: “This event offers an opportunity for all generations to come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day whilst remembering the millions who paid the ultimate sacrifice for peace, those from Farnham and the rest of the country, and those from other countries who supported us.”
The day will end with a procession from the war memorial which will be led by Farnham’s branch of the Royal British Legion and will include cadets and veterans. There will also be a tribute read by Deputy Lieutenant Bill Biddell and the lighting of a beacon by the High Sheriff, Peter Cluff. Everybody will be invited to join in the patriotic hymn ‘I Vow to Thee, My country’.
Throughout the evening, light refreshments will be available along with a licensed bar selling locally brewed beer.
