Fifty years ago on 20 July 1969 the first humans landed on the moon. In recognition of this great accomplishment, Farnham Town Council has created a carpet bed of flowers to commemorate the moon landing.

The 3m by 3m floral tribute is located near the war memorial in Gostrey Meadow and is sponsored by the Farnham Carnival Committee.

Councillor Sally Dickson, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom says: “The carpet bed has been designed to depict the image of an astronaut on the moon. The recent combination of rain and sunshine has given the plants a really good start and by the time we get to the actual anniversary of the moon landing in July, the carpet bed will look very established. We are delighted to have the support of the Farnham Lions and Hedgehogs in helping to make this carpet bed possible – I’m sure it will be a very popular feature of this year’s Farnham in Bloom and is well worth a look if you happen to be in Farnham this weekend for the carnival or Picnic in the Park.”

Carnival Committee Chairman, Graham Noakes said: “Together with the Parade, the Gostrey Meadow Fayre is absolutely central to the success of the Carnival every year. On behalf of Farnham Lions, The Hedgehogs and all involved with the Carnival therefore, we are delighted to be associated with another of the jewels in Farnham’s crown!”

Every year, the carpet bed is planted to mark a special occasion. Previous themes have included HM The Queen’s 90thbirthday, the centenary of the Lions Clubs International, 25 years of Farnham in Bloom and the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Judges from South and South East in Bloom and Britain in Bloom will be shown the carpet bed when they visit Farnham on 9, 10 and 31 July.
