Farnham’s secret gardens

Courtyard garden in the summer. Gravel in the middle, surrounded by plants.

Farnham Town Council is on a mission to discover the area’s best secret gardens.

The Secret Garden competition aims to unveil hidden courtyards, fabulous shop fronts and pub gardens, creative container planting, wildlife havens and imaginative front and back gardens.

Judges will award points for planstmanship, well-tended lawns and hedges, provision for wildlife and the use of environmental measures such as compost areas and water conservation.

The Mayor of Farnham and 2014 Secret Garden judge, Councillor Jeremy Ricketts says: “The secret garden competition attracts some really imaginative entries and shows that you do not need a large garden to be able to create a beautiful space. 2015 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of Farnham in Bloom so it would be wonderful to celebrate the occasion by seeing even more people taking part in this year’s competition.”

The competition is open to people who live in the Farnham Town Council area and there are eight categories to enter. A £50 gardening voucher and a trophy will be presented to the winner of each category. Certificates and garden vouchers will be awarded to those who come second and third. The prizes have been sponsored by Squire’s Garden Centre, Forest Lodge Garden Centre and The Patio Black Spot Removal Company.

The closing date for entering is 24 June and judging will take place on 1, 2 and 3 July. To enter, residents should complete and return the Secret Garden entry form.
