Residents get prepared

The Mayor of Farnham with members of Team Rubicon

Visitors to the recent Flood and Winter Risk Community Drop-In event are now better informed about how they can protect themselves from the effects of adverse weather.

The event, which was aimed at community groups, businesses and residents was jointly hosted by Farnham Town Council, Waverley Borough Council and Surrey County Council.

A range of experts from the local authorities, emergency services, utility providers health sector, National Flood Forum, Environment Agency and local voluntary groups were on hand to answer questions and to advise what steps people can take to protect their property and keep themselves safe during bad weather.

Speaking after the event, the Deputy Mayor Councillor Mike Hodge said: “Although it has been some years since Farnham experienced severe flooding or a weather-related emergency, adverse weather conditions mean it could happen again and with little warning.

“We were delighted to welcome around 50 visitors to the drop-in event and were pleased to have a team of professionals on hand to share a wealth of information and to answer a wide range of questions. We hope that those who attended will pass on the information they learnt so that their friends, family and neighbours can also be safer this winter.”

Following the success of the event, it is anticipated that further roadshows will be held with the aim of improving wellbeing and building community resilience.
