Here’s how to volunteer for Farnham in Bloom.

Farnham’s green spaces belong to all of us and looking after them is a shared responsibility. Whether you can spare an hour every now and again or you can commit to something more regular, your contribution will make a big difference and will benefit the whole community.

Ways to get involved

Join a ‘Friends of…’ group

These friendly volunteer teams help to care for Farnham’s parks, open spaces and cemeteries. Tasks include planting bulbs, weeding, pruning, tending flowerbeds, planting trees and encouraging biodiversity.

Be a Bloomin’ Friend

Bloomin’ Friends help pot on plug plants, create the planters and containers seen in the town centre and villages, make hanging baskets, help with watering and complete small weeding tasks. It’s social, rewarding and has a big visual impact.

Help keep Farnham tidy

If you love where you live, litter picking is a simple and flexible way to show pride in your neighbourhood. Many volunteers build it into a weekly walk or organise a monthly tidy-up of a favourite street or green space.

Meet the Volunteers

Meet Les

Les describes himself as “not much of a gardener”, but that hasn’t stopped him becoming a valued member of the Badshot Lea Bloomers.

He volunteers at least twice a week and can be found helping out at the community garden with ‘handy man’ tasks, taking part in community clean up days, and setting up and clearing away equipment for the popular Bloomin’ Kids’ Gardening Workshops. Every Monday, he litter picks a set route around Badshot Lea – efforts that earned him the title of Litter Picker of the Year at the 2025 Farnham in Bloom Awards.

Meet Shirley

As a Bloomin’ Friend, Shirley has helped plant thousands of plug plants and has created hundreds of hanging baskets and containers which can be seen throughout Farnham and its villages.

She admits that even when she’s not officially volunteering, she can’t resist plucking out the odd weed she spots in a planter! Shirley volunteers because she loves it – especially the community spirit. She has met a wonderful group of people and says their paths might never have crossed if it weren’t for their shared love of gardening.

What is the time commitment?

Volunteering is flexible and can be worked around your other commitments. Volunteer for an hour every now and again or participate on a more regular basis – the choice is yours.
