Farnham welcomed some very special visitors this week when judges from South and South East in Bloom assessed the town’s entries to the horticultural competition.

Farnham Town Council is hopeful that the creativity and biodiversity of this year’s entry has impressed the judging team and will result in top awards.

Councillor Sally Dickson, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom said: “Judges assessed our entry to the large town category on 13 July and our entries to the best cemetery category and town centre category on 15 July. We have boosted our efforts this year to up our game on wildlife and tree planting and also showcased the community effort behind Farnham in Bloom – aspects which we know the competition judges are keen on but that have clear benefits to our town and residents too.”

Volunteers rallied to carry out last minute tweaks and checks, ensuring the hundreds of planters, hanging baskets and flower beds were looking their best. Local businesses swept up outside their premises and residents picked up discarded litter. Ours thanks also goes to Waverley Borough Council and their contractors, Biffa and Continental Landscapes who helped to make sure Farnham look its best. Allotments, gardens, meadows and areas recently planted with trees are also key elements of this year’s entries.

“Farnham in Bloom has yet again done an amazing job in mobilising volunteers, businesses, school children and first-time gardeners. All those involved can give a collective sigh of relief as the last of the hard work is completed and we wait for the results,” continues Councillor Dickson. “Their efforts have been supported by our fantastic new principal sponsor, The Patio Black Spot Removal Company. Without sponsors’ financial support and the team of volunteer organisers, Farnham simply could not have bloomed as wonderfully as it has this year.”

Awards will be announced in September after judges discuss their scores over August.

Efforts now turn to completing the RHS Community Awards virtual submission for Farnham. The results for this will also be announced in September.
