Farnham’s First Five writing competition opens for entries
Aspiring novelists are being invited to showcase their writing talent as Farnham Literary Festival launches its annual First Five writing competition, offering the chance to win a £1,000 prize and professional feedback from publishing industry experts.
Farnham’s First Five is open to anyone with a novel idea, whether they are taking their first steps as a writer or hoping to secure a publishing deal.
Entrants are invited to submit the first 5,000 words of their novel, together with a 250-word synopsis, for the opportunity to impress a distinguished panel of judges. This year’s judging panel includes bestselling authors B.A. Paris, Suzanne Goldring, Louise Morrish, Melanie Whipman and Guy Morpuss, alongside literary agent Katie Fulford.
The winner will receive the prestigious Paris Prize for Fiction, comprising £1,000 and a professional literary critique from Katie Fulford of Bell Lomax Moreton. The prize is generously sponsored by B.A. Paris, whose novels have sold nine million copies worldwide and been translated into 43 languages.
Second place will receive £300, with £200 awarded to the third-place winner.
The competition deadline is Monday 30 November 2026. The longlist and shortlist will be announced ahead of the winner being revealed at an awards ceremony on Sunday 14 March 2027, marking the finale of Farnham Literary Festival.
Farnham Town Council’s Lead Member for Culture, Councillor Kika Mirylees, says: “Farnham’s First Five is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring authors to share their work, gain recognition and receive valuable feedback from experienced professionals. We hope to encourage writers of all backgrounds and experience levels to take part.”
