Farnham’s Mayor, Councillor David Attfield, will lead the town in Commonwealth Day commemorations on Monday 11 March. The Mayor will raise the Commonwealth Flag outside the Town Council offices on South Street, Farnham in a ceremony that will be replicated in cities, towns and villages throughout the UK and across the world.

“Commonwealth Day sees communities across the globe celebrate our links and friendships, our diversity and the things we have in common. In Farnham, I will be joined by children from local schools, cadets, voluntary groups, councillors and members of the public,” says the Mayor. “Our flag raising is an open event so all are welcome – if you come from or have links with another Commonwealth country, we would especially like to see you.” 

The event starts at 10am. At the ceremony the Mayor will read a message from HM The Queen written especially for 2019’s Commonwealth Day. This year – which is the 70th anniversary of the Commonwealth in its current form – has the theme ‘a connected Commonwealth’ and focuses on the opportunities for institutions, governments and individuals from a rich and diverse family of nations to connect and work together.

The day will also be celebrated in Westminster Abbey with a multi-cultural and multi-faith service which will include a procession of Commonwealth flags carried by young people representing all 53 countries that make up the Commonwealth.
