Remembering with flowers

A carpet bed of flowers commemorating the end of World War One has been a feature of Gostrey Meadow in Farnham this summer.

Over 4,000 plants were used to plant the three by three metre square design which depicted a lone silent solider against a Union flag and a cross. The design was specially commissioned by Farnham in Bloom and commemorates the centenary of the end of the first world war.

Councillor Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Farnham in Bloom says: “Every year, we choose a topical theme for the carpet bed. I think this year’s subject matter was particularly poignant and the unique design resulted in a very striking display.

The bedding was sponsored by the Farnham Lions. Phil Williams from Farnham Lions says: “The Lions Club of Farnham is once again delighted to support Farnham in Bloom and to be the sponsor of the carpet bedding, located in Gostrey Meadow, commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War and also celebrating the centennial of Lions Clubs International as well as it being a great community initiative.”

The carpet bed can be seen near the war memorial in Gostrey Meadow and is likely to remain in place until the autumn.
