Art project receives a grant

Mayor hands large cheque to lady.

An art competition inspired by Farnham in Bloom has been awarded a grant for £1,800 from the South Street Trust.

Blooming Art is the idea of local artist Jo Aylwin and is described by her as a new way to get people involved in Farnham in Bloom.

To enter the competition, residents from the Farnham area are invited to make a collage on the theme of ‘blooming’, using materials such as paper, recycled objects, material, wire or wood.

Free workshops are being held between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday 16 May and from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday 20 May. The workshops aim to introduce budding artists to different ideas of collage.

Commenting on the grant, which was presented by the Mayor of Farnham, Cllr Jeremy Ricketts, Jo Aylwin says: “Farnham in Bloom is a very important initiative for Farnham and given the town’s rich heritage in arts and crafts, it made sense to combine the two and launch an art competition to mark the 25th anniversary of Farnham in Bloom. The competition also helps to demonstrate that Farnham in Bloom is about much more than flowers.”

Cllr Jeremy Ricketts who is the Mayor of Farnham and Chairman of the South Street Trust Grants Panel says: “Blooming Art sounds like a very exciting project and I am delighted that we have been able to support it. I am very much looking forward to seeing the winning works on display at 40 Degreez on Saturday 11 July.”

Farnham Town Council is the trustee of the South Street Trust, which awards £20,000 a year for art-based activities. The Trust was set up following the sale of the Farnham School of Science and Art in 1986/87. The school was established by local philanthropists James and John Knight in 1880 for the ‘instruction of children and adults in drawing, painting, modelling, designing for architecture, manufacture and decoration and for no other purpose’. The proceeds from the sale were invested and it is this that provides an annual income for the grants.
