Schools remember

Pupils representing 12 local schools have taken part in a special service of remembrance at the War memorial in Gostrey Meadow.

Shortly before 11am today, the children, teachers, the Mayor of Farnham and around 200 members of the public watched as members of the Royal British Legion marched to the War memorial. With the sound of the bells from St Andrew’s Church in the background, the standard bearer lowered the branch standard and a two-minute silence was observed. The children were then invited to lay their wreaths and place wooden crosses on the memorial before returning to Farnham Town Council for refreshments.

Julie Aldridge, Coordinator of the Fearnhamme School Confederation said: “The confederation is a partnership of 12 schools in the Farnham area and it was during a meeting with heads that we decided we would like to take part in a shared act of remembrance. We got in touch with Farnham Town Council and are really pleased that we were able to work together to organise today’s event.

“As well as the service at the War memorial, all the schools held their assemblies at the same time today so the children could sing a special song of remembrance and observe the two minute silence together.“

Speaking after the service, Georgia, Sonald and Declan who are members of Hale School Council took pride in explaining how they had been chosen to represent their school. They described how they had carefully laid their wreath and crosses on the War memorial and were unanimous in concluding that the experience had been ‘really good’.

The Mayor thanked all the children for attending and for being part of the Farnham community.
