Farnham's History Explained
Bronze and Iron Age people used Farnham as a junction of track ways. The Romans used its plentiful clay to make stunning pottery and the Saxon’s gave the town its name.
Soon after the Norman Conquest the Castle was built and Farnham grew through the Middle Ages thanks mainly to the wool trade.
During the 17th and 18th Centuries Farnham grew into one of the largest corn markets in the South of England. Towards the end of the 18th Century and into the beginning of the 19th Century Farnham became famous for the hops it grew.
In 1884 the army came to neighbouring Aldershot and Farnham became the traditional ‘market Town’ we know and love today.
