History of the Council
Before 1974 the Farnham Urban District Council was the local and district body that was responsible for the town and environs of Farnham. In 1974 the Farnham Urban District Council was disbanded and Waverley Borough Council took over all its assets and responsibilities.
Farnham remained without a Town or Parish Council until 1984. In 1984 consent was granted to form Farnham Parish Council. The Council was formed from eighteen elected members representing nine wards in the Parish of Farnham. In May 1984 the Parish Council of Farnham resolved that henceforth it would be referred to as Farnham Town Council.
In 1986 the Town Council was granted permission to use the Armorial Bearings, known as the Coat of Arms, that had first been granted to the Farnham Urban District Council in 1950.
The first Mayor of Farnham Town Council was W.A. Smallman. He was Mayor for two years until 1986 and since then Farnham Town Council has had 22 mayors. More information on past Mayors is available on the 'Town Mayor' page.
