Surrey Trading Standards have issued the following information:
Damon Lee from Sandhurst, Berkshire and Daniel Collins from Yateley, Hants, both itinerant builders, appeared at Woking Magistrates Court on 22 June 2007 and pleaded guilty to summonses under the Consumer Protection (Cancellation of Contracts concluded away from Business Premises) Regulations 1987.
Messrs Lee and Collins working together as Global Property Maintenance, cold-called on consumers in the Frimley, Surrey area and failed to provide the required notice to a retired man.
The notice gives the consumer a 7 day cooling off period to decide if he wants the works carried out. In fact a price was agreed and the work was started immediately until intervention by Trading Standards Officers from the 'rapid action' team. In sentencing the Magistrates took into account that Mr Collins had a previous conviction for an identical offence.
The men were fined £400 each and were each ordered to pay £400 costs towards the prosecution.
If you are approached by cold callers or you are aware of cold callers operating in your area this should be reported to Consumer Direct on 08454040506 and the Police.
