Flying the Flag for Farnham

25.07.08

On Sunday 24th August 2008, an historical moment in British history will be remembered for years to come. Thousands of people will be descending upon the streets of London, millions watching television and listening to the radio to ensure they are involved in the start of a remarkable and outstanding four year celebration; the launch of ‘London 2012.’

This date marks the closing of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and subsequently the world renowned Five Ring flag will be handed over to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to commemorate the Capital and Great Britain as Olympic host City and Nation.

Do you fancy being part of the celebrations but can’t travel to London? Well you can be, as ‘Flying the Flag for Farnham’ will be right here on your doorstep.

The London 2012 Organising Committee is presenting Farnham Town Council with a special 2012 flag to be raised on 24th August to mark the moment of the handover ceremony.

The flag will be raised at 15:30 at the Sports Pavilion in the Rural Life Centre, Tilford as part of ‘Sunday Funday.’ This is the museum’s special children’s day for 2008 with games, arts and crafts, apple bobbing and fun sports to name but a few of the activities.

The flag will be raised by Evie Ayres-Townshend; Farnham’s 2007 Young Person of the Year and helped by the Town Mayor, Cllr Gillian Beel.

Evie said, “I’m very excited to be raising Farnham’s Olympic flag and I wish lots of good luck to everyone who has the dream of competing in the 2012 Olympics”.

Evie deservingly won the Young Person award last November, chosen by former Mayor Cllr Carole Cockburn for her outstanding achievements in TAGB Tae Kwon-Do. In April 2007, at the age of nine, Evie became one of the UK’s youngest Black Belts in the martial art of Tae Kwon-Do.  As well as achieving her Black Belt, Evie, who trains with HED TKD, competed in two events at the 8th Open Tae Kwon-Do World Championships, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.

The Town Mayor comments, “It gives me great pleasure to be involved in the celebrations, particularly as Tae Kwon-Do is one of the Olympic Sports. I am thrilled Evie will be there to help me.”

Jeremy Hunt MP for South West Surrey added, “I am delighted that Farnham is getting involved with the launch of the 2012 Olympics.  We won the bid for the 2012 Olympics on the pledge that the whole of the UK would benefit from the Games and that young people would be at the heart of the event, so it’s great that the people of Farnham can get a feel of that Olympic spirit.  Evie is setting a fantastic example and I hope many young people in the area will be inspired by her achievements and get involved with a sport.”

The Sunday Funday is from 10:00 – 17:00. Admission costs are £6 for Adults, £5 for Concessions, £4 for Children and under 5’s are free. Family tickets are available for £18, which includes 2 Adults and 2 Children.

Come along as a family and join in the fun and be a part of a significant moment in Farnham’s history.
