Carnival Anniversary for Citroën's Saviour
For several years now, members of the Citroën car club have been holding a summer get together at Tilford's Rural Life Centre. They like the country life museum for the relaxed atmosphere it provides and the interesting surroundings to explore in their classic vehicles.
This year, though, to mark the 40th anniversary of one of the marque's classic models, they will be putting on more of a public appearance. As well as the rally on Sunday June 27th, the members will also be joining in with their vehicles as part of the museum's entry at Farnham Carnival the preceding evening. Along with museum volunteers in appropriate costume and the now familiar double-decker bus from the Aldershot & District Omnibuses Rescue and Restoration Society (ADORRS) there will be a parade of Citroën GS and GSA models this year celebrating their 40th birthday.
Designed by the company to fill a gap between economy models and the more luxurious end of the range, the GS would see Citroën declare bankruptcy in
1974 before truly making its mark with almost two million GS and over half a million GSA models eventually being produced.
Officially launched on the 24th August 1970, the club's GS/GSA and Ami rally will slightly pre-empt the actual date but the organisers expect a good number of vehicles to take part in both the carnival and the museum rally.
However they're also willing to open the Sunday event to other classic vehicles of the same era - if you have a car of the 1970s why not contact the organiser, Chris Salter, and join in the fun. For details give him a ring on 01252 697047 or email him at simcauk(at)yahoo.co.uk.
The Citroën Rally takes place at the Rural Life Centre, an accredited museum of village life mid way between Tilford and Frensham in Reeds Road off the
A287 three miles south of Farnham, between 10am and 5pm on Sunday 27th June. For further information telephone 01252 795571.
