FTC to commemorate Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary
2010 is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and Farnham Town Council would like to commemorate the event with a floral display beside the war memorial in Gostrey Meadow.
A floral tribute has been designed for the Royal Air Forces Association who hope that this national celebration will be marked by towns and cities throughout the country. The Chairman of The Farnham in Bloom Working Group, Cllr Jill Hargreaves, commented: ‘Farnham Town Council would like to pay tribute to those who gave so much during the Battle of Britain. This is an important and poignant anniversary and we would like to show our appreciation and thanks by honouring them with a floral display beside the War Memorial in Gostrey Meadow. The tribute comprises many hundreds of red white and blue plants and a copy of the design is attached so that you can imagine how spectacular this would look. This project will cost over £1,000 and Council is hoping to persuade local people to make a donation, no amount being too small. We will acknowledge those who have contributed through the installation of a sponsorship plaque beside the floral display.’
The Royal Air Forces Association has suggested ‘ by taking part, the people of Farnham will be helping to raise awareness of The Battle of Britain, the people who fought to save the country and the local people who today benefit from the Royal Air Force Association’s specialised welfare support. Trained RAFA volunteers provide a range of highly valued social care services to many ranging from World War II survivors to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan today. We do hope you are able to help Farnham show its appreciation to everyone touched by the Battle of Britain in 1940.’
