Friends of the Farnham Cemeteries

 

Local people interested in becoming a Friend of the Farnham Cemeteries met last week to discuss and create a list of events and activities that they would like to do for 2010. Farnham Town Council is responsible for 4 cemeteries in Farnham and it was agreed that activities should be scheduled for each cemetery. 

In West Street, there is a designated ‘wild area’, where the Friends are going to count the species of butterfly they find to see what wildlife there is in the area.  This will be organised between the months of April to September and volunteers are required to help with the count. Hale cemetery is architecturally important with many memorials dating back to Victorian times.  The Friends would like to start helping to preserve the history by cataloguing the memorials. This will be done by taking photographs and doing memorial rubbings of the headstones so that local history is not lost forever.    

In Green lane Cemetery, there will be an Open Day with a guided tour.  For instance, did you know that Ellie Norwood who played Sherlock Holmes in 47 silent movies is buried in Green Lane Cemetery? Further details of the tour and will be announced at a later date.  

Finally, Farnham Town Council is looking to enter Badshot Lea into the Cemetery of the Year competition, organised by the Memorial Awareness Board as the group thought that dates and conditions surrounding the competition could help with the up-keep of the cemetery.
