Return of Council Offices to Farnham
At a Full Council meeting held last Thursday 5th August, Farnham Town Council accepted a formal offer from Waverley Borough Council to transfer the Council Offices to Farnham Town Council.
Town Mayor, Councillor John Ward said, “I am delighted that, as a result of a decision taken at Council on Thursday 5th August, Farnham is now within sight of a long-held ambition to regain ownership of its Town Hall.”
This building (currently called the Locality Office) used to house the offices of the Farnham Urban District Council which was abolished in 1974 and its assets transferred to the, then newly formed, Waverley Borough Council.
Cllr Ward continued “It is a significant step in local democracy; demonstrating good co-operation between Councils; that both Waverley & Farnham have agreed to the transfer at nil cost.”
There is still some legal work to be completed but Farnham Town Council hopes to have a ceremonial "Return of the Keys" sometime later this year.
Cllr Ward added “Getting our offices back has been a goal of Farnham Town Council for some time and I must pay tribute to all involved that we are in this position today.”
