Become a Friend of the Farnham Cemeteries
Are you interested in your local history and would like to help preserve history, as well as maintaining ecology and assisting in the upkeep of the Farnham Cemeteries? Then joining the Friends of Farnham Cemeteries could be the answer.
On Saturday 18th July at Green Lane Cemetery Farnham Town Council will be holding an open day between 11am and 3pm where people can find out how you can join the ‘Friends of Farnham Cemeteries Group’ and the role that you could play.
Also, on the launch day there will be a guided tour at 11.30am by Jenny Mukerji who is researching the genealogy of Green Lane Cemetery – for instance do you know that Ellie Norwood who played Sherlock Holmes in 47 silent movies is buried in Green Lane Cemetery?
For other interesting facts join the tour or come down later and do a self guided tour. Keep the children and grandchildren amused with bug hunts whilst you will be able to learn about the history of the Cemeteries.
Farnham Town Council decided that they would like to establish a ‘Friends of the Farnham Cemeteries’ group, which will be independent of the Council, to assist the Council in maintaining and improving the 4 cemeteries run by Farnham Town Council. Wendy Coulter Member and Committee co-ordinator comments that ‘The Friends of Farnham Cemeteries Group will help preserve and be able to record the historic heritage of the monuments. On many of the old graves the inscriptions are becoming unreadable and the information will be sadly lost forever.’ Councillor Lucinda Fleming, Town Mayor went onto say that ‘The Friends of Farnham Cemeteries group could also help with general tidying, cleaning, pruning and weeding, preserving and conserving wildlife, cataloguing and managing the tree population, recommending cemetery improvements to the council as well as identifying, clearing and maintain graves of local historical interest.’
