Protect yourself from flooding

Last winter was one of the wettest on record with many nearby towns and villages experiencing devastating flooding.

The bad weather highlighted the need for communities and businesses to take steps to protect themselves from future bouts of bad weather. To help with preparation, Farnham Town Council has organised a Flood Information Drop-In event on Wednesday 29 October from 6.30-8.30pm at The Barley Room, Farnham Maltings.

Representatives from The Environment Agency, Surrey County Council, Waverley Borough Council, the National Flood Forum and Thames Water will be on hand to answer questions and to inform people about how they can protect their homes and businesses from flooding.

Cllr Jess Parry who is a member of Farnham’s River Management Committee says: “Everybody is welcome to come along to this information evening. We know from the media coverage earlier this year that flooding can happen really quickly and that you do not have to live close to a river to be affected. This event will provide visitors with an opportunity to view highway wet spots and watercourse flood zone maps and to find out more about maintenance plans.”

As well as practical advice, there will be information on products and insurance and advice and support for existing or new community-led flood groups.

Further information about protecting property from flooding as well as up to date flood warnings and river levels can be found on the gov.uk website.
