An exhibition that aims to identify buildings and heritage features that are important to the Farnham community will open on Saturday 13 September.

‘Buildings of Merit in Farnham’ can be viewed in the Long Kiln Room at the Farnham Maltings until 24 September. It includes photographs, sketches and illustrations of local buildings that are not listed nationally but which deserve to be considered for inclusion on an official list of notable local buildings.

The exhibition has been arranged in conjunction with the Heritage Open Days and has been organised by the Farnham Society, the Blower Foundation and Farnham Town Council.

Michael Blower from the Blower Foundation says: “This is the seventh year we have held an exhibition about Farnham’s architectural heritage. Starting with the town centre and working out to the surrounding villages, we have divided up Farnham into 24 areas. Using information available to us, we have identified buildings and features that are not protected by listed building status but which we feel are particularly noteworthy. It will be interesting to see whether exhibition visitors agree with our selections and to hear about other buildings they feel should be considered for local listing.”

Councillor Carole Cockburn, Lead Member for Planning says: “I have been treated to a sneak preview of the exhibition and found it fascinating. The display panels are beautiful and include photos and information about buildings that have played an important part in shaping our villages and the people who lived there. For example, Badshot Lea School is featured and although it is not protected as a listed building, who could ever imagine the main village crossroads without the presence of the school? The exhibition will certainly highlight the importance of making sure we do as much as we can to protect the buildings and features that matter to our communities.”
